Designed to LEED silver, the innovations at RightWay Auto ranged from business plan to architecture. The owners were looking to create a whole new way to buy and sell cars. Keeping existing cars in circulation, as opposed to buying new, is a tremendous way to lower the carbon footprint of any car purchase, and so Right Way was established to take the stigma out of buying high end used vehicles. The concrete and steel structure is arranged on an east-west axis that provides ample north-south fenestration for easy solar control as well as a natural flow for passive ventilation. A central atrium brings in natural light and provides openings to allow the stack effect to move hot air up and out of the building. Fixed exterior louvers with interior light shelves coupled with an exterior structure that will carry deciduous vines provide shade from the intense summer sun while allowing lower angle winter light to warm the space. The building’s green roof will provide habitat for birds, mitigate storm-water control issues, and provide additional insulation; while drought-tolerant plantings elsewhere will avoid a permanent irrigation system.
